| Description | This is an Okeh Records 78 rpm shellac disc, catalog number 8535. The disc reads "Savoy Blues" (Ory), designated as a Fox Trot, credited to Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five, with matrix number 82056 and the designation "W 80556-A" alongside "Made and Patented in U.S.A. Jan. 21, '13, Nov. 22, '23" and the Okeh Electric Phonograph Corporation trademark. "Savoy Blues," composed by Kid Ory, was recorded on December 13, 1927, during the same session that produced the flip side of this disc, "Hotter Than That," a tune composed by Armstrong himself. The personnel for these sessions included Louis Armstrong on cornet, Johnny Dodds on clarinet, John Thomas on trombone, Lonnie Johnson on guitar, Lil Hardin Armstrong on piano, and Baby Dodds on drums. The record is housed in its original Okeh paper sleeve emblazoned with the slogan "Okeh — The Record of Quality" and an illustration of musical instruments including a violin, banjo, and drum, along with promotional text noting "Every month we offer— the very latest dance records...the country's most recorded dance orchestras." |
