"Potato Head Blues" is among the most celebrated recordings of the Hot Seven sessions, recorded in Chicago on May 10, 1926. The personnel for this session included Louis Armstrong on cornet, Johnny Dodds on clarinet, John Thomas on trombone, Lil Hardin Armstrong on piano, Johnny St. Cyr on banjo, Pete Briggs on tuba, and Baby Dodds on drums.

The recording is historically significant for its extended stop-time cornet solo by Armstrong, widely regarded as one of the defining improvisational statements of early jazz and frequently cited by critics and musicians as a landmark in the development of the jazz solo tradition.

The reverse side of this disc carries "Put 'Em Down Blues," also performed by Louis Armstrong and His Hot Seven from the same recording sessions.

The 78 rpm disc is an Okeh Electric release, catalog number 8503, presented in its original Okeh sleeve emblazoned with the slogan "The Record of Quality" and an illustration of period instruments including a drum, violin, and horns.

The side shown features "Potato Head Blues," composed by Louis Armstrong and credited to Louis Armstrong and His Hot Seven, listed as a Fox Trot. The matrix number W80855 appears etched near the label edge, with the standard Okeh Electric label design in red and gold and the manufacturing notice "Made and Pat'd in U.S.A. Jan 21, 17, Nov 22, 21, Okeh Phonograph Corporation."
