| Description | Gennett 5132 is a 10" shellac 78, matrix 11389-B, in its original plain Gennett sleeve with gothic-letterhead print. The dark blue label reads "Dipper Mouth Blues," credited to "(Oliver-Armstrong)," performed by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, with a Starr Piano Co., Richmond, Indiana credit line. The flip side, 5132-B, carries "Weather Bird Rag" (matrix 11388), by the same band. The disc was recorded April 6, 1923, at Gennett's Richmond, Indiana studio, with King Oliver (cornet, leader), Louis Armstrong (second cornet), Honoré Dutrey (trombone), Johnny Dodds (clarinet), Lil Hardin (piano), Bill Johnson (banjo/bass), and Baby Dodds (drums, woodblocks). Oliver's three-chorus plunger-muted solo on "Dipper Mouth Blues" became one of the most imitated solos in early jazz, and the session remains a foundational document of New Orleans jazz style transplanted to Chicago. |
