| Description | This is an 11'x11" wooden shipping crate used by Gennett Records to distribute phonograph records, of exceptional significance to the Louis Armstrong collection as Gennett Records of Richmond, Indiana was the label on which Armstrong made some his earliest and some of his most historically important recordings with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in 1923. The Jefferson stamp - still attached - was issued 1923. The crate includes original printed shipping labels featuring the Gennett Records logo — a decorative circular emblem in blue — alongside the printed text reading "Contents: Gennett Records / Fourth Class Mail" and "POSTMASTER / THIS PARCEL MAY BE OPENED FOR / POSTAL INSPECTION IF NECESSARY" and "GENNETT RECORDS / RICHMOND, INDIANA." Each label also bears a "To" field, though the recipient addresses are no longer legible. Affixed to the left side of the crate is a red-printed warning label reading "RECORDS / Keep Away From Heat / KEEP DRY / VERY FRAGILE." The crate is nail-constructed of wood planking. |
