Description

A matchbook cover printed by David Lionel Press, Chicago, advertising a "GALA Home Coming Dance AT VICTORY ARENA Conti and Roman Sts." featuring "LOUIS ARMSTRONG and His Famous Orchestra" on "SUN. NITE, AUG. 9TH." 

The Victory Arena at Conti and Roman Streets was a prominent New Orleans venue, and this item documents one of Louis Armstrong's appearances in his hometown during the early 1940s.

Ticket pricing is listed as "Advance Sale Tickets 90¢ / At Door $1.15 Balcony 55¢ / All Tax Included." The lower border reads "CLOSE COVER BEFORE STRIKING." The reverse side of the cover, shown inverted, carries advertising for the Gypsy Tea Room in New Orleans: "For the Best of Fun and Entertainment, Visit the GYPSY TEA ROOM / The South's Largest Nite Club / Good Floor Shows / TASTIEST DRINKS AND BEST OF MUSIC / At All Times / St. Ann -- Villiere and Orleans Sts. / MA. 8383." The interior strip reads "Make Table Reservations At the Gypsy Tea Room."
